The opiate crisis has a significant impact in our emergency departments. Overt overdoses, co-occurring substance use, infections, houselessness, years of life loss, frequent users of EDs, moral distress amongst staff, care provider’s biases, lack of resources and outpatient wrap around pathways, are but a few of the complex aspects of OUD in ED. The opportunity to impact those who use opiates in emergency departments is large and for most part untapped. We want to honour the facts that our emergency teams are exhausted, overburdened, overwhelmed and provide them with knowledge, skills and resources to improve this care in their departments. Learning Objectives At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. To share qualitative and quantitative evidence of the need, success and challenges of Emergency Department Opiate Antagonist Treatment (ED OAT) care. 2. To share interdisciplinary successes and opportunities of growth from those who have gone before with ED OAT care 3. To provide a “toolkit” for ED team members to start their journey of being OAT prescribers and care providers in our EDs.
